A overview of key activities, lectures, institutional engagements, and media participation undertaken by the Million Trees Association in Iraq during 2023.

Highlights of Million Trees Association's Activities in 2023

1- On July 20, 2023, Al-Rabiaa Satellite Channel interviewed Mr. Muwafaq Mubaraka regarding private electricity generators and ways to mitigate their environmental damage, and later on August 12, 2023, regarding waste-to-energy conversion.

2- On July 24, 2023, Mr. Muwafaq Mubaraka, Mr. Adnan Hadi Al-Hassouni, and Mr. Manhal Hami Al-Zaidi participated in a symposium organized by the Women's Rehabilitation Department at the Iraqi Media Network, Al-Hareth Group, and the College of Medicine at Wasit University, held at the Iraqi Media Network headquarters in Baghdad. The symposium discussed adopting solutions to improve environmental conditions and address the risks of climate change. It also introduced the Environmental Police and its duties in combating pollution, environmental crimes, and regulating hazardous chemical substances entering Iraq. Representatives from the Union of Agricultural Associations, the Baghdad Chamber of Commerce, and the World Bank also participated. Additionally, the Environmental Observatory's "Environmental Platform" app was presented for reporting environmental violations in Iraq, alongside the "Green House Project for Combating Climate Change".

3- On July 26, 2023, members of the Association met with Ms. Maysoon Al-Qaisi and her colleague Mr. Sajjad, representing the Birds of Peace organization (specializing in humanitarian affairs and environmental protection, based in Al-Suwaira), at the Salsabil II Nursery. It was agreed to cooperate in feasible areas to execute environmental improvement projects under contracts with relevant authorities. Ms. Maysoon requested a draft memorandum of cooperation.

4- On July 27, 2023, represented by Mr. Muwafaq Saleh Mubaraka, the Association participated in a symposium held by the Studies Department at Al-Nahrain Center for Strategic Studies / National Security Advisory, following an invitation extended by Ms. Maysoon Al-Qaisi. Attendees were asked to submit recommendations and proposals (detailed in the attached image in the appendix). Further communication remains available via phone at: 07709023560.

5- Upon an invitation from the Agricultural Supplies Company, Mr. Muwafaq Mubaraka delivered a lecture titled "The Role of Afforestation in Supporting Energy, Reducing Emissions, and Improving Environmental Conditions" on August 6, 2023, during a seminar held at its hall. Copies were distributed to members and the Association's media outlets. The Iraqi Engineers Syndicate also published an article on the subject in *Green Buildings* magazine, Issue 21 – October 2023.

6- Mr. Hussein Al-Nahhal, Mr. Uday Al-Rubaie, and Mr. Muwafaq Mubaraka visited Dr. Najla Al-Waeli, Director of the Technical Department at the Ministry of Environment, along with section representatives, to introduce the Association. They presented proposed plans to control dust storms and combat desertification, as well as samples of the Association's work, such as the Dibis Forest Rehabilitation Study submitted to the Forestry and Anti-Desertification Department in 2021, and the Northern Green Belt Rehabilitation Project proposal submitted to the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine in 2017. The Association was invited to participate in the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) from November 30 to December 12, 2023, in Expo City Dubai at its own expense.

7- A PowerPoint presentation was prepared for the Association's online participation on October 21, 2023, in a symposium organized by the Iraqi Academics Association in London. Mr. Hussein Ali Ghani delivered the lecture titled "Adapting Agricultural Methods and the Evolution of Tree Seedling Irrigation Technology in Arid Regions" as part of a conference addressing Iraq's water crisis. The link to the presentation will be announced, and the topic will be published following the conference date.

8- On September 25, 2023, Ms. Zainab Ahmed, a correspondent for German TV channel ZDF, reached out regarding a visit to current and past afforestation sites managed by the Association to prepare a comparative news report for the upcoming UN Climate Conference (COP28) in Dubai Expo City. When contacted recently to confirm their arrival date in Iraq, she informed us that they were preoccupied with ongoing events and would update us on a potential visit later.

9- In mid-October 2023, Mr. Muwafaq Mubaraka met with Mr. Hallo Ghazi, President of the Dubiz Environmental Care Association based in Kirkuk, to draft a memorandum of cooperation, copies of which were circulated to the Association's members.
